Heritage sale 3042, lot 29653
from Heritage Auction Galleries

This specimen was lot 29653 in Heritage sale 3042 (Long Beach, September 2015), where it sold for $940. The catalog description[2] noted, "Louis XIV Ecu 1694-M MS63 NGC, Toulouse mint. A select Mint-State selection with classic toning patterns and subtle, under-strike detail still somewhat visible. This date/mint combination is not an easy one to acquire, especially in such a choice designation, and as such, this pleasing specimen is worthy of much attention." This type was struck 1693-1701 in large quantities, mostly overstriking older écus ("flans reformés"). This is a somewhat scarce date. It was succeeded by the écu aux insignes.

Recorded mintage: 17,136 on new blanks plus "reformed"[1].

Specification: 27.45 g, 0.917 fine silver, 38-41 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVVM FAC REGEM, designed by Joseph Roëttiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 510, Dr/2 № 410, Dav-3813, Gad-217.
