Jean Elsen sale 145, lot 1142

This specimen was lot 1142 in Jean Elsen sale 145 (Brussels, September 2020), where it sold for €90 (about US$128 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR quart d'écu aux palmes, 1694P, Dijon. 2e réformation. D/ B. cuir. à d. R/ Ecu de France rond, couronné, entre deux palmes. Rare Réformé sur un quart d'écu aux huit L de Paris. Belle patine. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, silver quarter écu of the palms of 1694, Dijon mint, second reformation. Obverse: armored bust right; reverse: round crowned arms of France between two palms. Rare, struck over a quarter écu of the eight "L's" of the Paris mint. Nice patina, Very Fine.)"

The specimen shown is a quart d'écu aux palmes struck at the Dijon mint during the reign of Louis XIV. It succeeded the quart d'écu aux 8 L struck 1690-93 and was superseded by the quart d'écu aux insignes struck 1701-03. It is more common than either type and the 1694-P is a common date.

Recorded mintage: 247,490, all rf[2].

Specification: 6.86 g, 0.917 fine silver, 27-28 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Joseph Roëttiers, this specimen 6,51 g.
