Mexico 1877-Ho A 5 pesos

Stack's Bowers February 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73389

This specimen was lot 73389 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2024), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 5 Pesos, 1877-Ho A. Hermosillo Mint. PCGS Genuine--Ex Jewelry, EF Details. A VERY RARE date, this example has experienced some time in jewelry, hence the details designation, but still presents a great and elegant look." The Mexico City mint issued a steady series of this denomination 1870-1905 and there are a few available dates from Zacatecas and Culiacan but the other mints (Alamos, Chihuahua, Durango, Guanajuato, Hermosillo) are all rare or uncollectible. This is one of four known dates from Hermosillo. We don't know why two assayers (A and R) are known for a date with a production run of less than a thousand.
