Brunswick-Grubenhagen 1584 thaler Dav-9018
This specimen was lot 1289 in Sincona sale 22 (Zürich, May 2015), where it sold for 350 CHF (about US$440 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Braunschweig-Grubenhagen, Herzogtum, Wolfgang Philipp II. 1567-1596 Taler 1584. Osterode. Sehr schön. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Grubenhagen, Wolfgang Philip II (1567-96), thaler of 1584, very fine.)"
Brunswick-Grubenhagen was a splinter of the Welf domains in north east Germany, first erected in 1291. It was partitioned and reunited several times. During its final incarnation, it was ruled by brothers Wolfgang and Philip II. On Philip's death, the title lapsed and the territory passed to Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. This type of 1577-84 is scarce.
