This specimen was lot 745 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €900 (about US$1,163 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG-GRUBENHAGEN, FÜRSTENTUM Philipp II. 1595-1596. Reichstaler (24 Groschen) 1595, Andreasberg. Ausbeute der Grube St. Andreas. RR Kl. Henkelspur, sehr schön. (Germany, principality of Brunswick Grupenhagen, Philip II, 1595-96, thaler of 1595, Andreasberg mint, for the mines of Grube St. Andreas. Rare, small mount mark, very fine.)"
Brunswick-Grubenhagen was a splinter of the Welf domains in north east Germany, first erected in 1291. It was partitioned and reunited several times. During its final incarnation, it was ruled by brothers Wolfgang and Philip II. On Philip's death, the title lapsed and the territory passed to Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. This mining thaler of 1595-96, issued during Philip's brief period of sole rule, is scarce. A triple thaler (Dav-9033) also exists.
Reported Mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
