Brunswick-Grubenhagen (15)94 thaler Dav-9023
This specimen was lot 5004 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €1,900 (about US$2,455 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG-GRUBENHAGEN, FÜRSTENTUM, Wolfgang und Philipp II. 1567-1595. Reichstaler (24 Groschen) 1594, Andreasberg, mit Titel Rudolphs II. Ausbeute der Grube St. Andreas. RR Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Teutoburger Münzauktion 78, Borgholzhausen 2013, Nr. 3792. (duchy of Brunswick-Grubenhagen, Wolfgang and Philip II, 1567-95, thaler of 1594, Andreasberg mint, struck in the name of Rudolf II, for the St. Andrew mine. Very rare, very fine to extremely fine.)"
Brunswick-Grubenhagen was a splinter of the Welf domains in north east Germany, first erected in 1291. It was partitioned and reunited several times. During its final incarnation, it was ruled by brothers Wolfgang and Philip II. On Philip's death, the title lapsed and the territory passed to Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. This thaler, struck 1594-95, is rare.
