Brunswick-Grubenhagen (15)94 1/2 thaler
This specimen was lot 2109 in Künker Auction 425 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €1,900 (about US$2,691 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · BRAUNSCHWEIG-GRUBENHAGEN, FÜRSTENTUM Wolfgang und Philipp II., 1567-1595. 1/2 Reichstaler (12 Groschen) 1594, Andreasberg, mit Titel Rudolfs II. Ausbeute der Grube St. Andreas. Von größter Seltenheit. Attraktives Exemplar mit hübscher Patina, sehr schön. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 165, Osnabrück 2010, Nr. 1846 und der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 370, Osnabrück 2022, Nr. 1424. (Germany, principality of Brunswick-Grubenhagen, Wolfgang and Philip II, 1567-95, half thaler or twelve groschen of 1594, Andreasberg mint, struck in the name of Rudolf II, for the St. Andrew mine. Extremely rare, attractive example with handsome patina, very fine.)"
The duchy of Brunswick-Grubenhagen was erected in 1291, partitioned in 1479 and reunited in 1526, only to fall extinct in 1596. It was seized by Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, which had to surrender it to Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle in 1617, with which it was permanently merged in 1665. The matching thaler (Dav-9023) was struck 1594-95.
