Künker sale 354, lot 5406

This specimen was lot 5406 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €4,600 (about US$6,402 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-GRUBENHAGEN, Philipp II. 1595-1596. Taler (24 Groschen) 1596, Osterode, auf seinen Tod am 4. April. Von großer Seltenheit. Attraktives Exemplar mit herrlicher Patina, fast vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Slg. Johann Max Böttcher, Auktion Möller 47, Kassel 2007, Nr. 140. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Grubenhagen, Philip II, 1595-96, thaler of 1596, Osterode mint, on his death on April 4. Extremely rare, attractive example with superb patina, about extremely fine.)"

Brunswick-Grubenhagen fell extinct with the death of this duke in 1596 and passed to Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel.
