Künker sale 354, lot 5405

This specimen was lot 5405 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €1,700 (about US$2,366 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-GRUBENHAGEN, Wolfgang und Philipp II. 1567-1595. 1/4 Reichstaler (6 Groschen) 1587, Osterode, mit Titel Rudolfs II. Äußerst selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Stempelfehler im Randbereich, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Grubenhagen, Wolfgang and Philip II, 1567-95, quarter thaler (six groschen) of 1587, Osterode mint, struck in the name of Rudolf II. Very rare, especailly in this quality. Planchet flaws on the rim, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

This type was struck 1577-94. Brunswick-Grubenhagen fell extinct in 1596 and passed to Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel.
