Künker sale 263, lot 743

This specimen was lot 743 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €1,700 (about US$2,196 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG-GRUBENHAGEN, FÜRSTENTUM Wolfgang und Philipp II. 1567-1595. Reichstaler (24 Groschen) 1574, Osterode, mit Titel Maximilians II. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Vorzüglich. (Germany, principality of Brunswick Grupenhagen, Wolfgang and Philip II, 1567-95, thaler of 1574, Osterode mint, in the name of Maximilian II. Rare in this grade, extremely fine.)"

Brunswick-Grubenhagen was a splinter of the Welf domains in north east Germany, first erected in 1291. It was partitioned and reunited several times. During its final incarnation, it was ruled by brothers Wolfgang and Philip II. On Philip's death, the title lapsed and the territory passed to Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. This type of 1571-77 is scarce; the cataloguers did not see fit to mention the mount mark.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-9017; Welter 529.
