SB822-30209r.jpg

This specimen was lot 30209 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $2,040. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Calenburg. Taler, (15)69/70. Muenden Mint. Erich II 'the Younger'. PCGS MS-62. With the name of Maximilian I. A VERY RARE and desirable type featuring a split date of (15)69 on the obverse and (15)70 on the reverse, this exceptional survivor exhibits a mostly argent nature toward the center of the planchet and a more burnished aspect to the iridescence as one approaches the peripheries. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1569-73 and the dates are frequently found muled, as here. It is rare. In 1495, a part of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel was sliced off to form Brunswick-Calenberg for Erich "the Elder". It was passed down to Erich "the Younger" in 1540 but, upon his death without issue in 1584, returned to Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel. This type was struck 1569-73.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM-MB101, Dav-9003; Welter-442 (Addendum).
