Brunswick-Calenberg (15)77 thaler Dav-9007
This specimen was lot 73275 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Calenberg. Taler (24 Groschen), "77" (1577). Muenden Mint; mm: crossed axes. Erich II "the Younger". PCGS Genuine--Scratch, EF Details. Despite the noted scratches, which run across the coat-of-arms held by the wildman and the eagle's outstretched wings, this lightly handled and pleasing toned specimen stands as an elevated representative from a SCARCE overall emission. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." In 1495, a part of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel was sliced off to form Brunswick-Calenberg for Erich "the Elder". This type was struck 1577-81 and also comes undated. This example sold for one quarter of the catalog value. It is from the original formation of the state which lapsed on Erich the Younger's death in 1584, reverting to Wolfenbuttel.
