Jean Elsen sale 149, lot 1943

This specimen was lot 1943 in Jean Elsen sale 149 (Brussels, December 2021), where it sold for €700 (about US$948 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"NEDERLAND, ZWOLLE, Stad, AR halve schelling van drie stuiver (luigino), 1662. Vz/ Gelauwerd bb. n.r. Kz/ Gekroond stadswapen. van der Wiel, Zwolle, 237; Cammarano 407. 2,21 g Zeer zeldzaam Krasjes. Zwak op kz. Zeer Fraai. Imitatie van de Franse 1/12 écu van Lodewijk XIV, bestemd voor export naar de Levant. (Netherlands, city of Zwolle, half schelling of three stuiver of 1662. Obverse: laureate bust right; reverse: crowned arms of the city. Imitation of a French 1/12 écu of Louis XIV, intended for export to the Levant. Very scarce, scratches, Very Fine.)"

This coin was struck in 1662 and 1664 in imitation of the French twelfth écu, then having a brief vogue in the Levantine trade.
