Fosdinovo in the seventeenth century

This specimen was lot 1723 in Stephen Album sale 38 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "FOSDINOVO: Maria Maddalena Centurioni Malaspina, 1667-1669, AR luigino, 1669, a few small corrosion spots, lightly toned, EF, R4 (MIR)." Fosdinovo is a tiny hamlet now in the province of Massa di Carrara in the northwest corner of Tuscany. In the seventeenth century, it was a semi-independent marquisate wedged between Genoa and Modena and ruled by the Malaspina family. This coin was struck in imitation of the French twelfth écu, then having a brief vogue in the Levantine trade.
