Fosdinovo in the seventeenth century

This specimen was lot 72679 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $80. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Fosdinovo. Luigino, 1667-A. Maria Maddalena Centurioni. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, AU Details. While cleaned, this example retains strong details and is a presentable example of a less commonly encountered type." Fosdinovo is a tiny hamlet now in the province of Massa di Carrara in the northwest corner of Tuscany. In the seventeenth century, it was a semi-independent marquisate wedged between Genoa and Modena and ruled by the Malaspina family. This coin was struck in imitation of the French twelfth écu, then having a brief vogue in the Levantine trade. Despite the "A" mintmark, it was not made in Paris.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 2.29 g, 0.917 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-Unlisted.
