Shown is a twelfth d'écu buste juvenile struck 1660-64 during the minority of Louis XIV of France (r. 1643-1715). Typically crummy looking coin from the Villeneuve Saint André mint, which operated briefly 1660-62. There was a fad for these in the mid-seventeenth century for use in the Levantine trade and they were extensively imitated by France's neighbors. Droulers[1] prices this date about 20% higher than the common date (1660-A). The "R" mintmark was reused when the Orléans mint opened in 1718.

Recorded mintage: 281,175[1].

Specification: 2.28 g, 0.917 fine silver, 19-20 mm diameter, designed by Jean Warin.
