Stack's Bowers 2024 NYINC sale, lot 52005
SB124-52005 rev.jpg

This specimen was lot 52005 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $4,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Louis d'Or, 1662-D. Lyon Mint. Louis XIV. PCGS MS-62. RARE in Mint State grades, this Louis d'Or displays a bright vibrance, with limited friction accounting for the grade assigned. An example that will doubtlessly capture the imagination of many collectors." The louis d'or juvénile was struck 1659-69 at Paris and Lyon. The type was superseded by the louis d'or à la perruque which was issued 1683-89. While no gold coins of Louis XIV can be called inexpensive, this period is scarce with no common dates.

Recorded mintage: 2,719[2], a rare date.

Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, plain edge, designed by Jean Warin.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 352, Fr-421; KM-200.3; Gad-246.
