This specimen was lot 33566 in Heritage sale 3106 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $1,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Louis XIV gold Louis d'Or 1661-A AU58 NGC, Paris mint. Louis d'Or au buste juvenile, tête lauree. An appreciable example of this seldom-seen type and one witnessed borderline uncirculated. Bathed in an abundance of mint flash and precluded from Mint State by only minimal handling, and best by only a single example. From the Mac and Rob Woodside Collection." This specimen is a louis d'or juvénile, struck at the Paris mint 1659-83. The type was superseded by the louis d'or à la perruque which was issued 1683-89. While no gold coins of Louis XIV can be called inexpensive, this period is scarce with no common dates.

Recorded mintage: 89,632[2].

Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, plain edge, designed by Jean Warin.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 349 or 352, Dr/2 № 233, KM 200.1, Fr-421; Gad-246.
