France 1660-K louis d'or

This specimen was lot 1236 in Goldberg sale 128 (Los Angeles, June 2022), where it sold for $2,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "France. Louis d'or a la meche longue, 1660-K (Bordeaux). Louis XIV. Mintage 9,091. The only example graded at PCGS. PCGS graded AU-53." The minting of the louis d'or à la mèche longue was supposed to cease in 1659, to be supplanted by the louis d'or juvénile. This rare striking is not listed in Droulers.

Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, plain edge, 24-26 mm diameter, designed by Joseph Roëttiers.
