This specimen was lot 43742 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[1] noted, "MONACO. 5 Sols (1/12 Ecu), 1664-(AC). Louis I (1662-1701). NGC MS-63. Three year type. Sharp struck and minimally marked with brilliant, fully lustrous centers and peripheries that are highlighted in soft golden color. VERY RARE quality, presently unsurpassed in certified grade for the type and quite possibly the finest extant of the date. From the Collection of Dr. James Eustace Bizzell, II." The prince of Monaco issued an extensive series of coinage, from copper double tournois to one écu, mostly imitation of the neighboring French coinage. Today, it is all scarce to rare altho, as always, the crowns obtain the highest prices. This type is noted for 1662-64. This denomination was last struck in 1681. The "(ac)" in the catalog description indicates a acorn privy mark. The lucky bidder on this lot obtained a substantial discount from the catalog value.
