Monaco 1665 1/12 ecu KM-40
This specimen was lot 99136 in Heritage sale 61253 (Dallas, January 2022), where it sold for $204. The catalog description[1] noted, "Monaco: Louis I Luigino (1/12 Ecu or 5 Sols) 1665 VF30 NGC. Round arms with 7 vertical rows of diamonds. Decorated in gleaming residual luster with traces of iridescence throughout." The prince of Monaco issued an extensive series of coinage, from copper double tournois to one écu, mostly imitation of the neighboring French coinage. Today, it is all scarce to rare altho, as always, the crowns obtain the highest prices. This type is noted for 1665-66 along with KM 39 and KM 41. This denomination was last struck in 1681.
