Monaco 1667-A 1/12 ecu
This specimen was lot 99137 in Heritage sale 61253 (Dallas, January 2022), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "Monaco. temp. Louis I Grimaldi Luigino (1/12 Ecu or 5 Sols) 1667-A MS61 NGC, Paris mint, Imitating the Luigini of Anne-Marie Louis d'Orleans of Dombes. A generally scarce minor, particularly in this mint fresh grade. Introduced in Dombes, the Luigino became imitated around the Mediterranean and, particularly, in Italy, where it was seen as a means to exploit trade with the Ottoman Empire. Mislabeled on the holder as a standard French 1/12 Ecu of the period. Ex. Künker Auction 233 (June 2013, Lot 2436)." The prince of Monaco issued an extensive series of coinage, from copper double tournois to one écu, mostly imitation of the neighboring French coinage. Today, it is all scarce to rare altho, as always, the crowns obtain the highest prices. This type, if it really is KM 41.1 (there is no photo in the SCWC), is an unlisted date. This denomination was last struck in 1681.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 2.29 g, 0.917 fine silver.
