Goldberg sale 89, lot 1172

This specimen was lot 1172 in Goldberg sale 89 (New York, January 2016), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Louis I, Grimaldi (1662-1701). Silver Ecu (Scudo), 1666. Draped bust to right. Rev. Crowned shield of arms. Harshly cleaned surface but essentially very fine, tiny edge cut by E of MONOECI. Rare." The prince of Monaco issued an extensive series of coinage, from copper double tournois to one écu, mostly imitations of the neighboring French coinage. Today, it is all scarce to rare. This type is noted for 1662-82.
