Jean Elsen sale 142, lot 1467

This specimen was lot 1467 in Jean Elsen sale 142 (Brussels, September 2019), where it sold for €2,400 (about US$3,116 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"MONACO, Louis Ier Grimaldi (1662-1702), AR écu de 3 livres (60 sols), 1668. D/ B. dr. et cuir. à d. R/ Ecu couronné. Très rare Petits coups. Beau à Très Beau. (principality of Monaco, Louis I, 1662-1702, silver écu of three livres of 1668. Obverse: draped and armored bust right; reverse: crowned arms. Very rare, minor nicks, Fine - Very Fine.)"

The prince of Monaco issued an extensive series of coinage, from copper double tournois to one écu, mostly imitations of the neighboring French coinage. Today, it is all scarce to rare. This type is noted for 1662-82.
