Jean Elsen sale 162, lot 2053
JE162-2053r.jpg

This specimen was lot 2053 in Jean Elsen sale 162 (Brussels, June 2025), where it sold for €460 (about US$638 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"NEDERLAND, ZWOLLE, Stad, AR zilveren dukaat, 1661. Vz/ Staande ridder naar r. met zwaard en provinciewapen. Kz/ Gekroond Generaliteitswapen. Gereinigd. Einde muntplaat. (Netherlands, city of Zwolle, silver ducat of 1661. Obverse: standing knight with sword and provincial arms; reverse: crowned arms of the Generality. Cleaned, good very Fine.)"

This type, listed for 1659-69, is not listed as expensive but usually comes in poor condition as most were badly struck. Zwolle is a town in the province of Overijssel. The municipal mints' habit of coining to short weight and short alloy infuriated the Estates General, which spent most of the seventeenth century on a campaign to close them all.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.25 g, 0.873 fine silver, this specimen 27,62 g.
