(The crowns of Castile and Aragon were united by the marriage of Ferdinand and Isabella. It was during their reign that the unification of the country's monetary system was decreed by the Pragmatica of Medina del Campo, dated June 13, 1497. The new gold coin, the excelente de la granada, had a value quite close to that of the ducat of Aragon (3.50 g at 23 3/4 carats fine). On the obverse is the royal couple, on the reverse the arms of the unified kingdom protected by an eagle. The double excelente was widely issued in the various mints of the kingdom and was very successful. Multiples of 4, 10, 20 and even 50 excelentes were also struck, most of which are extremely rare. The multiple of 10 excelentes was until now known from only two examples from the mint of Segovia. The only other example to appear at auction, with different dies and assayer's mark F, is that of the Huntington collection (Vico 130 sale, Madrid, June 26, 2012, 438, sold for €450,000). Our example bears assayer's mark P, from which the quadruple excelente (A.C. 769) is also known)

This was issued as part of a coinage reform of 1497. The double excelente (Fr-127 thru Fr-132) is the most common seen but four, ten, twenty and fifty excelentes were also struck, likely for presentation. This is listed in Numisma as a ten ducats.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
