Ponterio sale 152, lot 7290

This specimen was lot 7290 in Ponterio sale 152 (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $1,495. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Escudos, 1789-FM. 'CAROL . IV' with bust of Charles III. VERY FINE." All Mexican colonial gold may be considered scarce but the eight escudos is the most numerous denomination. This type was struck 1789-90 during the transition from Charles III (1759-88) to Charles IV (1788-1808).

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold.
