Künker sale 386, part of lot 5142

This specimen was part of lot 5142 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), which sold for €480 (about US$620 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG-CELLE, FÜRSTENTUM, Georg Wilhelm, 1665-1705. 24 Mariengroschen 1675, Celle. Dazu: 2/3 Taler 1692, Celle. 2 Stück., Herrliche Patina, fast vorzüglich und sehr schön +. (duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle, George William, 1665-1705, 24 mariengroschen of 1675, Celle mint. Also included is a two-thirds thaler of 1692. Two pieces, superb toning, about extremely fine and choice very fine.)"

This type of 1674-76 is the first issue of this denomination from this state. A similar 24 mariengroschen exists (KM 293) with the value inside a wreath. An issue of 1690-91 (KM 330) completes the short series. Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle lapsed in 1705 on the death of the last duke and was merged with Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 16.42 g.

Catalog reference: KM 345.2, Dav-368, Welter 1591.
