Iran AH1331 2 toman
The first specimen was lot 1111 in Sincona sale 50 (Zürich, October 2018), where it sold for 2,500 CHF (about US$3,016 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Sultan Ahmad Shah, 1327-1344 AH (1909-1925). 2 Tomans 1331 AH (1913 AD). Von grösster Seltenheit. Fast FDC. Bei den Stücken des Jahres 1331 AH handelt es sich vermutlich um Probeprägungen, die in der Münzstätte Brüssel hergestellt wurden. (Empire of Iran, Ahmad Shah, AH 1327-1344, two tomans of AH 1331. Of the highest rarity, About uncirculated. This piece and others of the same date are likely samples from the Brussels mint.)"
The second specimen was lot 1198 in Sincona sale 85 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 4,200 CHF (about US$5,656 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"IRAN, Sultan Ahmad Shah, 1327-1344 AH (1909-1925). 2 Tomans 1331 AH (1912/1913 AD), Tehran Mint. Bust type. Extremely rare. NGC MS60. From the Kian collection, auction SINCONA 49, October 2018, lot 240. Bought from S. Cordry, San Diego, 1984. Finest certified by NGC. This 2 Tomans is the only known regular issue of this type. There are 1 Toman coins of Ahmad Shah with the reverse of this coin reading 2 Tomans, but they are not 2 Tomans in weight."
This pattern is unlisted in the SCWC (which mentions a bronze two toman pattern) or in Friedberg (who mentions two toman coins but of one toman weight).
Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.
Specification: 5.74 g, 0.900 fine gold, 30 mm diameter, the first specimen 5.61 g, the second specimen is 5.60 g.
