from the Stack's Bowers 2019 ANA sale, lot 21720
Spain SB819-21720r.jpg

This specimen was lot 21720 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2019), where it sold for $1,140. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. 2 Escudos, 1813-C SF. Cataluna Mint. Ferdinand VII. NGC AU-50. A very rare issue of the Cataluna mint, lightly circulated with soft tone and traces of residual luster in the recessed areas of the design." The SCWC reports this rare coin from Cadiz, seemingly incorrectly. It was struck 1811-13, all dates are rare. The Cataluña mint was actually on Mallorca, protected from Napoleonic attack by the British navy.

Recorded mintage: 87,000, a better date.

Specification: 15 g, 0.800 fine silver, 31 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Cayón-16230, Fr-314; KM-469; Cal-type-45#188.
