Stack's Bowers 2025 NYINC sale, lot 34186

This specimen was lot 34186 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $3,360. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Empire. Demi-Franc (1/2 Franc), Year 14-L (1805/6). Bayonne Mint. Napoleon I. PCGS AU-55. The only representative of the date and mint in the PCGS census, this near-Mint minor provides an elegant overall appearance through its tremendous originality, problem-free nature, alluring burnished iridescent toning, and ample remaining brilliance. A RARE and important offering. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Mike O'Connor on 26 October 1972 for $200). Ex: Jacques Schulman (5/1972) Lot # 653." This dime-sized coin was struck at Bayonne under the régime of Napoleon soon after he made himself emperor of France. The type was struck AN12-14 only and is rather scarce. It was demonetized in 1869.

Recorded mintage: 3,883[2].

Specification: 2.5 g, 0.900 fine silver, 18 mm diameter, reeded edge. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819.
