Stack's Bowers October 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74489
SB1024-74489r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74489 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. Holy Roman Empire. Taler, 1713-A. Augsburg Mint. Charles VI. PCGS AU-50. A variant with the right side of the eagle's tail to the left of the peripheral legend. A charming warm gray issue. Some marks are present on the hair of the bust, but the details are otherwise well-preserved." Austrian thalers for 1713 include Dav-1089, KM 1522/Dav-1035, KM 1548/Dav-1107, KM 1551/Dav-1039, KM 1552/Dav-1050 (shown here), KM 1553/Dav-1046 and KM 1554/Dav-1047. Charles was the younger brother of Joseph I and was not expected to inherit the imperial throne. As such, he was put forward as the rival candidate of Philip V for the Spanish crown. His brother's unexpected death in 1711 made him the Holy Roman Emperor and his anti-French allies quickly lost interest in placing him on the Spanish throne. This type was struck in 1713-14 while the Austrian army occupied Augsburg and Bavaria during the War of the Spanish Succession. Varieties exist.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.2-28.6 g, silver, 44 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Dav-1107; KM-1548.
