from the Stack's Bowers 2020 NYINC sale, lot 23261
Mexico SB120-23261r.jpg

This specimen was lot 23261 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $690. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Tuxtla. 1/4 Real, 1838. NGC MS-64 Red Brown. Non-circulating fantasy coinage. A lustrous coin with slight magenta tint." Tuxtla is the capital of the state of Chiapas. The obverse legend, "CANTON DE TUXTLA", suggests a European origin for this piece, as Tuxtla is a municipality, not a canton. Locally made municipal tokens exist in many varieties but are nearly always crudely struck. The obverse design appeared on several other salesmen's samples of the period, such as KM NC6.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper or bronze.

Catalog reference: KMX-NC10.
