Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1800-MC 24 mariengroschen
This specimen was lot 39152 in Stack's Bowers Winter sale (Baltimore, November 2015), where it sold for $381.88. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel. 24 Mariengroschen (2/3 Taler), 1800-MC. Brunswick Mint. Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand (1780-1806). PCGS MS-63 Secure Holder. Last year for the twelve-year type. The only example at this numeric grade, with just one example certified finer (MS-64) at NGC and PCGS. Krause lists the coin at $850 in BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED. Light wood-grained cedar tone with no breaks to the underlying luster. A tinge of blue tone at the rims on the reverse. A marvelous example, with most other surviving examples heavily circulated." This type is listed for 1789-1806. This denomination was also struck with a leaping stallion obverse until 1800. It was valued at 2/3 thaler but weighed only half a thaler.
