This specimen was lot 72229 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $840. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. Cob 4 Reales, 1610-To C. Toledo Mint. Philip III. PCGS MS-61. A SCARCE type, especially in this high state of preservation. The mintmark, assayer, and denomination are all shown clearly on the obverse, along with most of the monarch's name. The reverse preserves much of its outer legends, including a clear date. The central devices on both sides are well-presented, especially the crisp and well struck castles and lions on the reverse. The surfaces are bright and lustrous, with a hint of light toning. This exceptionally original and attractive example is sure to excite quality-conscious collectors. From the Pat Johnson Collection. Privately purchased from Mike Dunigan." This type was struck at Toledo 1602 and 1609-21. Other mints striking four reales during the reign of Philip II include Valladolid, Granada, Segovia, seville and Madrid. Assayer "C" is listed for 1602-15.
