The first specimen is an 1840GoPJ 4 escudos, one of a type struck 1825-69. The second specimen was lot 549 in Morton & Eden sale 104 (London, November 2019), where it sold for £850 (about US$1,317 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic, 4 escudos, Guanajuato mint, 1840 PJ, old file test-mark on edge and mintmark from a faulty punch, otherwise brilliant mint state." now NGC MS-63. Assayer PJ is recorded at the Guanajuato mint for the years 1834-41. Guanajuato struck this type 1829-63, which is also known from the Mexico City, Zacatecas, Guadalajara, Oaxaca, Hermosillo, Guadalupe y Calvo, Culiacan and Durango mints. Type collectors must usually settle for a specimen from Mexico City or Guanajuato; the other mints are very rare. Long[1] notes this date as common. This specimen was lot 340 in Ponterio sale 135.
