This specimen was lot 1381 in Stack's "Vermuele, Ward & Mexico Maxico" sale (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $3,220. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Republic. 20 Pesos, 1880 Go S. Guanajuato. Bold eagle facing r. with snake in beak. Rv. Cap and Rays above scales of Justice, dagger, and scroll of laws. Lustrous and well struck, with pleasing surfaces and no rim problems. Lightly cleaned. About Uncirculated." The Guanajuato mint struck twenty peso gold pieces 1870-1900 in sufficient quantity to be the second commonest mint after Mexico City.
