Sincona sale 46, lot 50

This specimen was lot 50 in Sincona sale 46 (Zurich, May 2018), where it sold for 1,500 CHF (about US$1,800 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"100 Yuan 1996. Panda. Kleines Datum. Polierte Platte. FDC. (China, one hundred yuan of 1996, panda, small date. Choice Proof.)"

The Chinese government has, since the mid 1980's, produced a mind boggling array of bullion related collectibles. The gold panda is one of the most popular. This one was issued when gold was at a very low price and hence sales were poor. Another panda featuring the titular beast sitting on a rock (KM 896) is equally scarce.

Recorded mintage: 1,500.

Specification: 31.1 g, .999 fine gold, 1.000 troy oz AGW, this specimen 31.12 g.

Catalog reference: KM 887. Fr-B4.
