Künker sale 423, lot 203

This specimen was lot 203 in Künker Auction 423 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €7,500 (about US$10,620 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HABSBURGISCHE ERBLANDE-ÖSTERREICH · RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Joseph II., 1765-1790. Souverain d'or 1786 F, Hall, für die Niederlande. Büste r. mit Lorbeerkranz, darunter die Münzstättensignatur F//Gekröntes Wappen der Österreichischen Niederlande, umher die Kette des Ordens vom Goldenen Vlies, dahinter Andreaskreuz. GOLD. RR Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Exemplar der Auktion Hauck & Aufhäuser 16, München 2001, Nr. 565. (Holy Roman Empire, Joseph II, 1765-90, gold sovereign of 1786, Hall mint, struck for the Netherlands. Obverse: laureate bust right, mintmark below; reverse: crowned arms of the Austrian Netherlands, order chain around, over a St. Andrews cross. Very rare, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

This type is filed under the Austrian Netherlands, an area which is now Belgium and Luxembourg. Besides Hall, similar coins are known from Vienna and Brussels. The type was struck at Hall 1786 only and previous souverains d'or date back to the reign of Maria Theresa.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a scarce date.

Specification: 11.06 g, 0.919 fine gold, 28 mm diameter, this specimen 11,12 g.
