This type is recorded for the Duchy of Milan 1786-90. Similar coins with other mintmarks (Brussels, Vienna, etc.) are listed under the Austrian Netherlands. The duchy of Milan was Spanish until 1714, when it passed to the Austrians, who lost it to Revolutionary France in 1797. After the fall of Napoleon in 1815, it returned to Hapsburg rule until the unification of Italy in 1859-60. This specimen was lot 31171 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Milan. Joseph II gold Sovrano 1786-M MS63 NGC. The first year in a brief five date series, this highly attractive piece offers brilliant luster and a charming light golden-orange tone, along with a pleasing originality. Scarcely encountered so choice."
