Künker Auction 425, lot 1418

This specimen was lot 1418 in Künker Auction 425 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €1,200 (about US$1,699 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HABSBURGISCHE ERBLANDE-ÖSTERREICH · RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Joseph II., 1765-1790. Sovrano 1788 M, Mailand. GOLD. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Holy Roman Empire, Joseph II, 1765-90, gold soverain of 1788, Milan mint. Very fine to extremely fine.)"

This type is recorded for the Duchy of Milan 1786-90. Similar coins with other mintmarks (Brussels, Vienna, etc.) are listed under the Austrian Netherlands. The duchy of Milan was Spanish until 1714, when it passed to the Austrians, who lost it to Revolutionary France in 1797. After the fall of Napoleon in 1815, it returned to Hapsburg rule until the unification of Italy in 1859-60.
