Austria 1788-A kronenthaler Dav-1170
The first specimen was lot 747 in Jean Elsen sale 112 (Brussels, March 2012) where it sold for €205 (about US$320 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Joseph II (1780-1790), AR couronne, 1788 A, Vienne. Type brabançon. Droit: Tête laurée à droite. Revers: Croix de Bourgogne entre trois couronnes, ornée du bijou de la Toison d'or. Nettoyée. Rare dans cette qualité. Superbe à Fleur de Coin. (Duchy of Brabant, Joseph II, 1780-90, silver kronenthaler of 1788, Vienna mint, Burgundian type. Obverse: laureate head to right; reverse: Burgundian cross divides three crowns, decorated with the Order of the Golden Fleece. Cleaned, rare in this grade, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
The second specimen was lot 3047 in Sincona sale 23 (Zürich, May 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[2] noted,
"RDR/ÖSTERREICH, Joseph II. 1765-1790 Kronentaler 1788. Wien. Fast vorzüglich-gutes vorzüglich. (Holy Roman Empire, Joseph II (1765-90), crown thaler of 1788, Vienna mint, choice extremely fine.)"
The crown thaler was struck on a heavier weight standard than the convention thaler, which was 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver. Originally intended for the Austrian Netherlands (now Belgium), it was also minted at Günzburg (Burgau), Vienna (shown here), Karlsburg (Hungary), Kremnitz (Hungary) and Brussels (Dav-1284).
Recorded mintage: unknown but common.
Specification: 29.44 g, 0.873 fine silver, .810 troy oz ASW, the first specimen 29,53 g, the second specimen 29.51 g.
