Austria 1790-A thaler Dav-1173
This specimen was lot 1271 in Jean Elsen sale 124 (Brussels, March 2015), where it sold for €1,500 (about US$1,870 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SAINT EMPIRE, Léopold II (1790-1792), AR Taler, 1790 A, Vienne. Droit: Tête l. à droite. Revers: Aigle impériale couronnée. Petites griffes au droit. Superbe. (Holy Roman Empire, Leopold II (1790-92), silver thaler of 1790, Vienna mint. Obverse: laureate head to right; reverse: crowned imperial eagle. Small obverse scratches, extremely fine.)"
The SCWC lists this type from 1790-92 as rather scarce, verging on rare. Other 1790 thalers exist with the bust of Leopold's brother Joseph II.
