Jean Elsen sale 164, lot 1148

This specimen was lot 1148 in Jean Elsen sale 164 (Brussels, March 2026), where it sold for €130 (about US$181 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Joseph II (1780-1790), AR 10 liards, 1788, Bruxelles. D/ Croix de Bourgogne. R/ Écu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Petites taches. Belle patine. Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Joseph II, 1780-90, silver ten liards of 1788, Brussels mint. Obverse: Burgundian cross; reverse: crowned arms, order chain around. Light stains, nice patina, Extremely Fine.)"

This type was struck 1788-89 and is fairly common. The angel face on the reverse is the Brussels mintmark. The SCWC states that there were 216 liards in a kronenthaler.

Specification: 2.45 g, billon, 19 mm diameter, decorated edge, engraved by Théodore Van Berckel; this specimen 2,38 g.
