Jean Elsen sale 138, lot 485

This specimen was lot 485 in Jean Elsen sale 138 (Brussels, September 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Joseph II (1780-1790), AR 10 liards, 1789, Bruxelles. D/ Croix de Bourgogne. R/ Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Joseph II, 1780-90, silver ten liards of 1789, Brussels mint. Obverse: Burgundian cross, reverse: crowned arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around. Extremely fine.)"

The lower, Catholic part of the Netherlands was Spanish until 1714, when it passed to the Austrians, who lost it to Revolutionary France in 1797. After the fall of Napoleon in 1815, Belgium passed to the king of the Netherlands. This type is listed for 1788-89. The angel face on the reverse is the Brussels mintmark. Four liards = one sol, 54 sols = one kronenthaler.
