Sincona sale 38, lot 1822

This specimen was lot 1822 in Sincona sale 38 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 4,000 CHF (about US$4,797 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Joseph II. 1765-1790 2 Souverain dor 1789. Brüssel. Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. FDC. Kleine Schrötlingsfehler. (Holy Roman Empire, Joseph II, 1765-90, double souverain d'or of 1789, Brussels mint. Very rare in this condition. Uncirculated. Minor planchet defect.)"

This type is filed under the Austrian Netherlands, an area which is now Belgium and Luxembourg. Similar coins are known from Vienna, Gunzberg, Kremnitz, Milan and Hall. The type was struck 1781-89 and previous souverains d'or date back to the reign of Maria Theresa.
