Morton & Eden sale 104, lot 650

This specimen was lot 650 in Morton & Eden sale 104 (London, November 2019), where it sold for £400 (about US$620 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Decimal Coinage, 5 pesos, Mexico City mint, 1870 C, good very fine, scarce [550 pieces struck]." The Mexico City mint issued a steady series of this denomination 1870-1905 and there are a few available dates from Zacatecas and Culiacan but the other mints (Alamos, Chihuahua, Durango, Guanajuato, Hermosillo) are all rare or uncollectible. This is a scarce date for the most common mint.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.

Specification: 8.46 g, .875 fine gold, .238 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM 412.5.
