San Luis Potosi 1830 1/4 real

Stack's Bowers 2019 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72568

This specimen was lot 72568 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it sold for $192. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. San Luis Potosi. 1/4 Real, 1830. San Luis Potosi Mint. PCGS EF-40 Gold Shield. Somewhat of a weak strike in the centers as is usual for this issue with lovely smooth surfaces and rich brown patina." This specimen is one of a series of copper quarter reales issued 1828-32 and 1859-60 by the "free" state of San Luis Potosi. The Mexican constitution reserved the right to coin gold and silver to the federal government but granted the right to mint copper to the states, which right they used and abused. For some states, this was a major source of revenue as the metal content was much less than the face value. For others, it was an opportunity to thumb their noses at the central government by proclaiming their "free and sovereign" status.
