Great Britain (1631-32)-B half crown
This specimen was lot 40379 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Oklahoma City, OK, August 2025), where it sold for $3,840. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 1/2 Crown, ND (1631-32). London Mint. Charles I. PCGS AU-53. Briot's first milled issue. Featuring the elegant and more refined engraving that was the calling card of Nicholas Briot, this minor presents deep gray toning and only minor, even wear across the high points. From the Lucius S. Ruder Collection." Nicholas Briot (1579-1646) was an engraver and medallist. He failed in his efforts to persuade French mint authorities to adopt modern milling machinery and so moved to London, where he was hired by Charles I. He produced a series of milled coins in the early 1630's (including the shilling shown here) and was sent by the king to Scotland to reform the mint there. He later served with the royalists in the Civil War and retired to France at the conclusion of that conflict. Hammered coinage continued in France until the 1650's and in England until 1664. The mintmark is the tiny "B" above the king's head.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 15.05 g, 0.925 fine silver.
