Stack's Bowers 2025 NYINC sale, lot 34307

This specimen was lot 34307 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $3,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Kingdom (First Restoration). 5 Francs, 1814-L. Bayonne Mint. Louis XVIII. PCGS MS-65. The single finest graded example of the date and mint in the PCGS census, this staggering Gem provides exceptional eye appeal and a soft argent-gray tone throughout, along with a great deal of dazzling brilliance. From the Richard Margolis Collection." This product of the Bayonne mint is a common date of a type struck 1814-15 during Louis XVIII's first restoration. A complete set comprises 31 date and mintmark combinations.

Recorded mintage: 1,901,563[2]. None were struck for Napoleon.

Specification: 25 grams, 0.900 fine silver, 37 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM.
